Two places with the same name. Two women with the same mother. Decades of malice and deception. From 1930 to the present day; from the sun-baked vineyards of southern France, to the lush green coast of northern Cornwall; a story of a friendship which knew no bounds - betrayal - and a love that refused to die.
"I bought this book, by an author I did not recognise, during a holiday two years ago in the region it so beautifully evokes. I had expected little but was delighted to have hazarded those few euros. I read it at a single sitting on my first day not only to relax and put myself in the mood of the moment, but because once started it was simply impossible to put it down. I have since read other books by Mandy Baldwin, and as with this first I have not been disappointed. Each author of note has a special gift and in the case of Mandy Baldwin I strongly believe it is her rare ability to create and sustain characters with whom we come to sympathise, while acknowledging their frailty. Around these characters, which are often their own Nemesis, the somewhat complicated story weaves, told from a variety of perspectives.
I must admit, while avoiding spoilers, in my opinion the character of Ange is one of the best studies of Gothic feminine spite since Mrs Danvers of Rebecca fame. Her lack of intelligence in combination with her malice, the reasons for which she lacks the wits to analyse, are quite splendidly explored. We are also shown that it is possible for the actions or inactions of a person who would otherwise hold a negligible place in our lives, to wreak havoc with lasting effects. The place was beautifully evoked, rather in the manner of an Impressionist painter than by a propensity to excessively descriptive phrases. In all, an excellent reading experience." Goodreads Review.
