It’s 9.05 pm on a cold Friday night in mid-October 2014 in East Lancashire and we have just had our offer accepted to buy a Dutch owned campsite in Auvergne, right in the rural heart of France.
Many people fall in love with France and the French way of life. If they are lucky some buy a ruin and renovate it to provide their place in the sun. Well we did it the other way around. As a family we first went to France because it seemed to be a cheap holiday for a couple and their young family. Over the years we fantasized about being able to afford our own ‘place in the sun’ and yes we managed to buy a house in France. No crumbling old ruin for us but a 35 year old house in good condition. Well this sounds rather dull but being Northerners we decided to do things the opposite way around. Not satisfied with a lovely holiday home we then decided to move to France on a permanent basis and sold up everything to buy a campsite in the Auvergne. This is the first book of hopefully two and tells of our journey from casual holiday-makers right up to our offer being accepted for a rather beautiful but run down campsite. We could be on the way to ruin.
This is a humorous telling of our search for a sustainable life in France but with some cautionary messages along the way. We found the journey great fun and met some marvelous people so please come and join us.
