The Victorian period was a contradictory one in many respects. Eroticism, Bigamy, Drug addiction and more were all widespread but were all tastefully “swept under the carpet”. Perhaps for this reason some of the more revealing stories about the exploits of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes as recorded by his faithful Dr. Watson had to remain locked away in “The Secret Bookcase” rather than being published in the “Casebook”. But modern tastes are less easily shocked. At least, we hope so.

About the Author Walter Rothschild


Walter Rothschild was born in Bradford in 1954 and read the entire Sherlock Holmes ouevre as a child. It struck him even then that there must be some stories missing, and he was happy in later life to have discovered the “Secret Bookcase”.


He later studied Theology at Cambridge, taught for a while and was ordained as a Rabbi in London in 1984. After 11 years as a rabbi in Leeds and all over Yorkshire he moved on to central Europe for a few years, then spent a year as rabbi on Aruba (in the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean) before returning to Europe where he still (despite everything) serves several Jewish communities in Germany and Austria as their Rabbi. In between he wrote a doctoral thesis on “The Last Years of Palestine Railways 1945-1948”, edits and publishes a quarterly magazine on the railways of the Middle East (“Harakevet”) and writes and sings parodies with his jazz band “Walter Rothschild and the Minyan Boys”. He spent years writing short stories, many for his three children, as well as articles, essays and sermons, and is currently (2014) working on three novels and two biographies simultaneously.
