Kingston University professor, Ralph Chalmers, aided by the indomitable Katie Eggerton continues his efforts as amateur sleuth in Thurbin’s fifth book in the Ralph Chalmers Mysteries. The doughty Professor finds himself caught between loyalty to his University’s reputation and exposing an unethical research scientist on the staff in another tale of murder and intrigue.
When claims of a breakthrough for a vaccine that tackles the SARS virus attracts attention from international terrorists and a Chinese pharmaceutical corporation, Ralph and Katie become embroiled in the murky dealings that underpin the shadier side of corporate funded scientific research. As the stakes get higher the villains are standing by, ready to grab the money regardless of who gets hurt in the process.
In their attempts to unravel the mystery, our protagonists travel far and wide where murder and mayhem await in the backstreets of Paris and Singapore’s atmospheric Chinatown.
The book is both topical and entertaining. Attempts to produce a “magic bullet” vaccine to tackle AIDS/HIV, Alzheimer’s and Type 2 diabetes is now a priority for leading scientists around the world. Thurbin’s meticulous research provides an inside view into this fascinating but often baffling area of medical science.
Familiar characters from the series provide a strong supporting cast along with some new and intriguing personalities as the story moves towards its climax. It culminates when Ralph confronts the murderer, where, as usual there is an ironic twist that will surprise and delight the reader.
As with his previous books in the series, Thurbin gives us a tale that will engage the reader who enjoys the challenge of a fast moving story set against the backdrop of beautiful and exotic places.
