Denis Garstin was a cavalry officer in the British Army. He went to France in the spring of 1915 and, as a machine-gun officer with the 10th Hussars, saw action near Ypres and on the Somme. In particular, he witnessed the Battle of Loos in the autumn of 1915, a Battle which he described vividly in his diary. In addition to his diary of that Battle, he wrote a number of stories based on his experiences of the war.

A Cavalryman's Tale brings together Denis Garstin's diary of the Battle of Loos, together with edited versions of other stories about serving in the British Army on the Western Front.

Denis Garstin died in 1918, and was awarded a posthumous Military Cross.
