In a few days it will be Christmas, 1941. The US has just joined the war, but only a few American volunteers have reached England yet. The Royal Air Force still fights a lonely battle against the Luftwaffe bombers, as they have for two years. One of the veterans of that fight, pilot Nigel Turner, is back after a bad injury, his body mostly healed but his spirit gravely hurt. His brother is dead, his mother is dead, and nearly all his friends are dead. His hands tremble when he lights a cigarette.
