It is 1939 and war with Germany is imminent. Major David Williams, who owns the village, organizes the men in case of invasion and they enjoy playing soldiers with much rivalry and humour. However, the vicar often has to reassure his secret lover, who still suffers from his experiences in the Great War.
It is the women who emerge as the strength of the community, led by Florence, a miner’s widow. The Penley Female Friends organize activities to help the war effort and boost morale.
Geoffrey, an orphan, is the village hero when he joins the R.A.F. His marriage to Elizabeth is the main village celebration. Other love affairs develop and wartime separations increase passion, when the lovers never know if they “will meet again.”
The German Army occupies most of Europe and the Blitz is relentless, but the villagers carry on “doing their bit,” mining coal, growing food and raising funds for the war effort, determined to preserve morale and community spirit come what may.
