'A Pint for the Ghost' is a poetry sequence which encounters the spirits of South Yorkshire legend: miners with unfinished business, phantoms who warn of danger, strange characters who only make themselves known in a lonely pub after closing time. 'A Pint for the Ghost' was a Poetry Book Society Choice in 2010.

Helen Mort was born in Sheffield and grew up in Derbyshire where she worked in a variety of haunted bars. She received an Eric Gregory Award in 2007 and won the Manchester Young Writer prize in 2008. As of 2010-2011, she is the Poet in Residence at the Wordsworth Trust, the youngest poet to have held the position.

“Helen Mort's work is full of ghosts of long forgotten stories, invisible ghosts that haunt landscapes we think we know well. This is an exciting collection from a writer who knows the value of the past, and how to set it against the present to illuminate them both.”

Ian McMillan

“A night-time encounter with the ghosts of worked out mines, smoky pubs and deserted highways. Award winning poet Helen Mort conjures them all in this compelling odyssey, reinventing and revelling in the voices of her native south Yorkshire.”

Patrick Morris - Menagerie Theatre Company
